Word of Moth

Spring Cleaning Time!

Spring has sprung, the weather is great, flowers are in bloom, and there is a playful spirit in the air.  What’s not to like about spring?  I think I speak on behalf of the majority of us that cringe with two words; “spring cleaning” Everyone has their own concept of exactly what this means.  Some of us simply put a little extra muscle into cleaning the inside of the home from top to bottom, a “field day” of sorts while others include getting rid of unwanted items.
One often overlooked “spring cleaning” chore is cleaning out closets and storage areas. Spring is the perfect opportunity to tackle this time consuming task.  The first step is to inspect for any sign of insect damage.  If holes are found in clothing, this is a sign of an active moth infestation. Damage generally appears in hidden locations such as under collars or cuffs of clothing, in crevices of upholstered furniture, and in areas of carpeting covered by furniture. Clothing moths leave behind their larvae in cigar-shaped cases, which are seen in the holes in the fabric. Use a flashlight to look for additional larvae under furniture or other low places where they hide, such as baseboards.  Any sign of damage usually means that you have a pest problem that must be taken care of immediately.Next thoroughly clean your closet. The vacuum cleaner is the best tool for most of this cleaning. After using it in infested areas, dispose of the bag contents promptly; they may include eggs, larvae, or adult moths. Get rid of anything that you have not used in the past year. Items that remain in a closet or in storage that go un-disturbed are the ideal environment for moths to lay eggs.  Donate any unwanted items to a local charity as the old adage goes one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.
